Police Say Teen Locked in Bathroom for Two Months By Her Father and Step-Mother

PHOENIX – “A malnourished Phoenix girl was locked in a bathroom without running water for two months, beaten with metal rods and forced to exercise until exhaustion because her father said she had stolen food and cheated on a home-school test, police say.”

Scott and Andrea Bass allegedly kept the 14-year-old locked up in a homemade dungeon for months -- because she stole food.

“Police said Wednesday that Scott and Andrea Bass, the 14-year-old girl’s father and stepmother, had been arrested Feb. 4 for investigation of child abuse, kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment.

Phoenix police Officer Luis Samudio said the girl escaped from the bathroom through the attic and rode her bike to a coffee shop, where a worker called police.”

Andrea Bass was released from custody, while Scott Bass, remains jailed. Why?

Andrea Bass, 31, apparently made the $36,000 bond. Scott Bass, 33, will stay in jail on a $45,000 bond. Why was the man given more bail than the woman? If she lived in that home, she is just as guilty.

“Inside the bathroom, police found a 5-gallon bucket containing human waste and a blanket on the floor that served as the girl’s bed, according to a probable-cause statement released Wednesday.”

“The document said Andrea Bass said she didn’t know that the girl was locked in the bathroom.”

Uh huh. How can a woman who lives in the same home with the husband and his daughter not know that a child is locked in a bathroom for two months? Didn’t she wonder where she was? Didn’t she wonder why the bathroom was locked for two months with noise and maybe even cries for help coming from inside???

“The girl told police that her father gave her cans of food, crackers or bread every one to two days, but that she was constantly hungry.”

“The girl said her father forced her to exercise until she was exhausted and beat her with belts and metal rods or pulled her up by her hair if she stopped the exercises. The girl also told police that in a previous home, her father and stepmother forced her to sleep on an outdoor patio for five months, locked her in a closet for a week, and locked her in a bathroom for a week.”

Well, there you have it. According to the victim, the step-mother knew damn well what was going on and was a part of it.

The teen has been evaluated and released from a hospital. She remains in the custody of Child Protective Services.

I hope those ‘parents,’ though I use that title sparingly, are locked up in the roughest prison they can find. I hope it’s drafty and their in cell toilets don’t work. I hope the food makes them sick and they’re forced to run and work everyday.

Why that ‘mother’ isn’t in jail is a crime in itself. There should be no bail for something like that- and why the heck was their bail on different levels anyways? Perhaps because she’s the step mother? That shouldn’t matter but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a factor.

Kudos to the girl for having the strength and bravery to escape. Speaking from experience when something like this happens to one so often sometimes it seems normal to them and not all kids think they’re supposed to escape. That she was able to make that decision when the chance came shows she has a good head on her shoulders and a strong spirit.

Yes, good for her to run. If she had been much younger, I don’t think she would have run. Most pre-teens ones don’t.
