Father of Rapist and Child Murderer Says Family Never Got His Son Help After He Was Sexually Abused

Let this be a lesson to parents who shove child sexual abuse and incest under the rug by choosing not to get help for their children:

“The father of a man facing a possible death sentence for killing a woman and her two daughters in a brutal Connecticut home invasion told jurors Wednesday he didn’t get his son psychological counseling after the boy was sexually molested by a foster teen he had taken into his house.

Benedict Komisarjevsky testified in the sentencing phase of the trial of his son, Joshua Komisarjevsky, who faces life in prison or the death penalty for his Oct. 13 convictions on capital felony killing, kidnapping, arson and sexual assault charges.

Co-defendant Steven Hayes was sentenced to death last year after he was convicted of raping and strangling Jennifer Hawke-Petit and killing her daughters, 11-year-old Michaela and 17-year-old Hayley, in their Cheshire home in 2007.

The girls died of smoke inhalation after they were tied to their beds and doused with gasoline before the house was set on fire. Joshua Komisarjevsky’s convictions include the sexual assault of the younger girl.

The sentencing phase began Tuesday with Komisarjevsky’s attorneys saying his ultra-religious family failed to get him proper help.

Benedict Komisarjesky, 63, said the foster teen was mentally retarded and had been abused before he moved in with the family. He said the teen was removed from their home after his wife discovered Joshua had been abused.

Asked if he got his son professional help, he said, “We didn’t come to that point.”

Of course they came to that point. They came to that point when their son was found to be sexually abused and they chose not to help him. Probably, out of their own convenience, they willfully ignored what happened and any after-effects.

“The elder Komisarjevsky, who admitted he was rigid in his beliefs and described practices such as speaking in tongues, also testified that he learned Joshua later had some type of sexual contact with his sister. “We didn’t know what to do,” he said. “I don’t remember doing anything.”

How about asking for professional help? Did pride, shame, and religious beliefs stop them from just simply asking someone for help??? How sad, because their inability to take action may have allowed incest, rape, torture, and murder.

“Komisarjevsky said that years later when his son was 15 and hospitalized after setting a gas station on fire, he was opposed to Joshua receiving medication.”

Well good, I am opposed to pharmaceutical drugs too. Prescription drugs are no path to healing. On the contrary, they make the person worse, but fire starting is one of the serious symptoms of having been sexually abused as a child. These people did not seem to go to the ends of the earth to find help for their son.  Would that be too much effort? Why do human beings ignore their mental health, and the mental health of their children, but go to any lengths to take vacations, get tickets to sold-out events, make money to have nice cars and nice clothes, spend weeks and months on the perfect lawn, push their kids to make the cheer-leading squad, find the very best deals on a flat screen TV, and study the bible so they can recite it like a parrot….but they don’t bother to understand, heal, and find peace for mental health problems?

SO you are saying that people who molested are all evil and are going to go out and commit horrible atrocities because they were molested and never received counseling? I don’t give a damn what happened to this sicko in his childhood this gives him NO EXCUSE for doing what he did. He made a choice. HIs choice was evil and he is evil. Hopefully he will get the death penalty that he deserves. It seems like you are defending a male sex predator and rapist with excuses. Where’s the love for the school teacher who merely had consensual affairs with grown male students? Total hypocrisy.

      Dear anonymous,

I find that your comments are aimed solely at combating me. NO WHERE in the article did I excuse or defend this rapist/child murderer.

And no, I am NOT saying that EVERY person who was molested or raped as a child will commit horrible atrocities. I was merely pointing out what CAN happen.

You seem to see things in my words that just aren’t there. Maybe you ought to look in the mirror and ask yourself what it is about my posts/opinions/beliefs that makes you so aggravated and angry.

It is a common notion that the mentally ill do NOT believe that they are ill.

I wonder what else happened to Joshua in his childhood that made him seek out an older man who recruited him to commit such heinous acts on a family that did nothing to provoke him.

Joshua has a violent fantasy life that includes arson. I wonder if he and his accomplice were lovers.

    • little nel says:

oops! I meant that they do NOT believe that they are ill.

We will probably never know, and even Joshua himself will never fully know why he sought out that man and allowed himself to join him. Joshua would need to have intensive therapy that penetrates his unconscious mind to know why.
